Thermal set

Thermal sets for children for transitional weather and outdoor play

A thermal set typically consists of a thermal jacket and a pair of thermal trousers, which can be worn together or separately. This makes the set easy to adapt to everyday life, when your child may need to play outside, spend time at nursery and come back indoors throughout the day. Thermal clothing is especially practical in spring and autumn, when the air is cool but the weather does not yet call for a heavy winter coat.

On dry days, a thermal set can be worn as a lightweight outer layer. When the wind picks up or there is moisture in the air, it can work as a warm layer under rainwear. The best choice therefore depends on your child’s age, activity level and the season in which the set will be used. Our selection includes thermal sets from En Fant, CeLaVi, Mikk-line, Wheat and MarMar.

When is a two-piece thermal set the right choice?

A two-piece thermal set gives you plenty of flexibility in everyday life. On a mild day, your child may only need the thermal jacket, while the thermal trousers can be paired with a top or another jacket for children if the weather changes. If it gets colder, simply put both pieces on.

For children in nursery and preschool, a thermal set is often a great solution because it moves with them as they run, crawl and climb. Trousers with elasticated waists or ribbed cuffs are easy to take on and off, while a zip on the jacket makes it easier for children to practise getting dressed independently. Pockets, reflective details and a fit that allows plenty of room for play can also be useful features.

For younger children, a thermal all-in-one can be a good alternative, as one complete layer is simple and easy to keep in place. A thermal set is a great choice if you want to adjust your child’s clothing throughout the day or use the jacket and trousers separately.

Thermal sets as part of a layering system

Thermal clothing works best as part of several lightweight layers. On a chilly day, your child could wear a soft top as the first layer, the thermal set over it and rainwear on top if rain is forecast. In dry weather, the set can often be worn on its own as the outermost layer.

A base layer in wool or wool and silk is a good option when your child needs help maintaining a comfortable temperature. In our collection of merino wool for children, you will find several soft layers that can be worn next to the skin. Wool provides warmth while also helping to draw moisture away from the body. On milder days, cotton can be a comfortable choice when less warmth is needed.

It is worth remembering that a thermal set is not always waterproof. Some styles are windproof or water-repellent, while others are primarily designed to provide warmth and insulation. If the set is going to be used in wet weather, you should therefore look more closely at the features of each individual style.

Materials and details that make a difference

Many thermal sets are made from quilted polyester. This creates a lightweight and warm layer that does not feel heavy when children are moving around. The quilting helps retain warmth, while the low weight makes the set comfortable for active outdoor play or as an extra layer under outerwear.

There can, however, be significant differences between individual styles. It can therefore be helpful to look for:

  • Windproof and water-repellent features: practical if the set will be used in windy weather, on damp grass or in light rain.
  • Elasticated details and ribbed cuffs: help the jacket and trousers stay comfortably in place without restricting your child’s movements.
  • Reflective details: make your child easier to see on dark mornings and afternoons.
  • Practical fit: the trousers should have room for a thin base layer without being so loose that your child trips over them.
  • Materials and certifications: check the individual product description for information about OEKO-TEX, GRS or other certifications.

For example, one En Fant thermal set in our range is described as windproof and water-repellent, with reflective piping and information about certifications. Features always depend on the individual style, so it is a good idea to compare the details before making your choice.

How to choose the right size and style

Start with your child’s height, and then use the size guide for the brand you are considering. There should be a little extra room for a thin base layer, but the set should still fit comfortably and allow your child to move freely. Sleeves or trouser legs that are too long can get in the way during play, while a set that is too short will quickly become difficult to use.

Also consider how the thermal set will fit into everyday life. For nursery and daily outdoor play, durability, easy dressing and freedom of movement are often the most important features. If your child mostly sits in a pushchair or bike trailer, warmth and the option to combine the set with other layers may matter more. If you only need one of the pieces, separate thermal trousers or a thermal jacket may be a more suitable solution than a complete set.

At House of Kids, you will find thermal sets from carefully selected children’s brands, allowing you to compare materials, features and fits in one place. Choose based on your child’s everyday needs and the season in which the set will be used. That way, you can find a warm and practical layer that follows your child from the morning nursery drop-off to afternoon play.
